M&J Group was appointed as the Principal Contractor to carry out a full pitched roof replacement across the three Main Office Blocks at the Thames Valley Police Headquarters. The high-security, multi-phase programme involved complex roof refurbishment works to an occupied and operational police facility.
The scope included removal of all existing roof coverings, design and erection of full perimeter scaffolding, and the supply and installation of a new interlocking concrete tile roofing system, in line with Building Regulations Part L (insulation) and Part F (ventilation).
Working within a live operational and high-security environment presented significant challenges for the project. All work was meticulously scheduled to ensure minimal disruption to the Police Headquarters, which remained fully operational throughout the project. Due to the sensitive nature of the site, every operative was vetted, and all vehicle deliveries were pre-registered, with ID checks and timed entry strictly enforced. Further complexity was added by the roof’s intricate geometry, which featured multiple intersecting structures, various pitches, and detailed work across hips, valleys, and dormers. This required careful sequencing of tasks, along with precise leadwork and tile layout.
